FAQ
Common questions
Is it really free?
Yes, for individuals and community groups such as non-profits and local communities. I teach them for free. If you'd like to give back, donations are welcome but never expected. Only team and company programs are paid.
What does the free consultation involve?
A 30-minute private video call with me. We'll talk about what you're looking for and what you've tried, and I'll suggest where to start. There's no commitment.
I'm too busy. Can meditation really fit my life?
That's exactly who I teach: tech workers, parents and professionals with 97 tabs open. I lead a large software team and I'm raising two young kids, so I build practices that work on a real schedule, without a quiet room, a special cushion or a charged phone.
Do I need any experience?
No. Every format starts from the beginning, and people who've tried apps or other styles are welcome too.
How much time does it take each day?
Most people practice for about 15 to 20 minutes a day. I help you fit it into a real schedule rather than an ideal one.
Is it on Zoom or in person?
Most teaching happens live on Zoom, so you can join from anywhere. In-person classes are available across New England, and I travel for team and enterprise events.
What's the difference between meditation and mindfulness?
They use the same basic techniques and sit on one spectrum. Meditation is formal practice that turns attention mostly inward, usually sitting with eyes closed. Mindfulness is the quality of attention that makes meditation work, and it is also a practice of its own: bringing that present, observing attention into daily life, like walking, eating, listening and working. You could call mindfulness meditation off the cushion. I teach both together.
Do I have to follow one tradition or one way of meditating?
No. I draw on several traditions and teach you a range of practices, from low-effort guided relaxation to high-effort self-guided training. I call this the effort knob: you learn to turn it down when you need support and up when you have capacity, so you can choose what works for you and become your own guide.
What techniques will I learn?
It depends on you. Options include breathwork, guided body scan, mantra meditation, calm abiding with the breath, insight meditation, See Hear Feel, mindful activity, Metta (loving-kindness), gratitude and affirmations.
Why learn from a teacher instead of an app like Headspace or Calm?
Apps like Headspace and Calm are a fine way to start, and guided audio is the low-effort end of the effort knob. But they need your phone, play the same recording for everyone and can't answer your questions. A live teacher fits the practice to you, helps with the common sticking points and teaches you to practice without any device. For individuals it's free.
What does the team Meditation Quickstart cost?
$100 per person. It's three one-hour live sessions for teams of about ten or fewer, with a custom intro video and ongoing weekly group meditations.
What does the enterprise program cost?
$5,000 for any number of employees, with travel and expenses billed separately. It includes six weeks of videos and live sessions and a custom intro video.
What happens after a class or program ends?
Individuals and teams can keep joining my group meditations and retake the course whenever a spot is open, both for life. You can also reach me for 1:1 coaching and use my meditation timer to track your practice.
